The biggest downfall of most small businesses is lack of consistency in product or service offerings, poor customer service, and/or no clear goal. These things cost the business money, which are all key to staying afloat and thriving as an entrepreneur.
A large company that’s been around for a while may have those problems, but they seem to work through it. It’s not easy, but their leadership seems to know what they want and have strategies to get there.
For entrepreneurs who don’t have that at this stage, it can be hard to maintain momentum when you're constantly trying to figure out what your next move should be.
It's important to have goals, but without consistency in how you go about achieving them, you'll hit a wall. A bumbling one will discourage people from helping you achieve yours!
In fact, some might even give up because they feel like they've tried everything and nothing has worked. This isn't a good situation to be in as an entrepreneur.
Hopefully you'll find a way to fix that by practicing more of these tips.
Make adjustments to the process
The best way to fix any system is to understand how it works, learn what parts of the process work well, and make small changes to improve them. In other words, keep tinkering!
This applies to business processes as well. If there are certain steps in a process that you or someone else can modify or add to the process, do so!
Think about it – why would most businesses have a very long process before they offer their products or services?
Most companies begin with offering their product or service and then work backward from there!
By adding an extra step between “offer” and “purchase,” you create a more efficient process for the company.
The same thing happens when some departments or individuals within a department pick up tasks that were left by past employees.
These workers may not be given full access to important documents or resources, but they can still get the job done. By adding these additional steps, people will feel like they are working towards a common goal while also improving the efficiency of the organization.
It is always better to help others succeed than to wait for them to fail on their own.
Take time to reflect on the process
A process is anything that you do repeated-ly, like baking a cake every day or going through your job several times a week. If you're in a position where you are required to perform an action over and over, it's what you do next!
A process can be improved by adding new steps to it or changing the order of some of the current steps. This is called improving the process!
Improving a process comes down to two things: making it more efficient and bettering its effectiveness.
Making it more efficient means doing the same thing quicker so that you use up less of the product (or service) per unit of time. For example, instead of writing five paragraphs, you write one very well done paragraph and then repeat this process for the rest of the articles you want to write.
Bettering its effectiveness means doing the same thing more efficiently so that you produce the same quality result as before. For instance, if taking a walk after working out is part of your workout routine, start walking immediately after leaving the gym.
Use the process to help identify weaknesses
A process is something that people do for fun sometimes! There are many ways to use your process as a tool for improvement. You can use it to find new strengths or improve things you already have going, or both.
The first way is to look at your current process with blinders on – make no assumptions about what needs to be done next. Ask yourself how well this one thing works and ask if there’s a way to combine it into a bigger picture.
It could be trying to achieve an objective, such as revenue generation, or ensuring every employee feels appreciated and trusted. Or it could be keeping everyone else out of a room so you can focus in work without distractions.
By breaking down these larger goals into smaller steps, you’ll see opportunities to add in other areas of the business that will create synergy. This will also give you more detail on what parts of the process need improving as you pick up speed.
Focus on the process to help workers be more productive
In an effort to make your workplace as efficient as possible, you may have noticed that some processes are taking longer than they should.
There’s nothing wrong with having a good process, but if a worker has to spend too much time doing something then they will not get anything else done! They set up this situation by spending too long on it.
By focusing on the process, we can determine how many steps there are in it, what areas of the process take the most time, and whether or not these steps can be automated or outsourced.
If any of those things are found then it is necessary to look into changing the process or looking for alternatives.
Provide additional training on the process
As mentioned earlier, your employee’s ability to perform their job effectively and efficiently is very important in producing quality products and services.
If they are not performing these tasks correctly, it will negatively affect the final product or service that you supply to your customers.
This could be due to skill set issues, time management problems, or understanding of how to carry out certain steps in the process.
It can also include personal reasons such as lack of motivation or exhaustion from doing too much.
Whatever the reason, if someone feels like they are unable to do their work properly then this can have an adverse effect on the company.
Use the process to identify root causes of problems
As mentioned before, you will not be able to effectively manage change unless it is happening constantly. This can easily lead to a situation where no one feels that their ideas matter since they have no effect on what goes onto the floor.
This was the case for me at my last job where I would propose new projects and get little feedback or response. The project would eventually get approved but too often it would happen after a lot of time and effort on my part as well as others’!
At BPI we have a term we use when talking about changes – “The Change Team Does Not Show Up.” We refer to this as NoIDT (no idea drop). For example, maybe someone has a great idea but nobody else seems to agree so they never bring it up for discussion.
We also have a term we call AARs (always respond) which means if someone does invite conversation then engage in an honest dialogue with them. If you feel like people are ignoring you then ask why? Is it because your opinion doesn’t seem to matter? Or perhaps it does but there are other more important opinions that take precedent over yours.
In these cases it is helpful to think about how you could help make sure that everyone’s opinion matters by identifying the underlying reasons. You could look at this as investing in the organization or leadership team so that they can give their full attention to helping the organization succeed.
Changing how you do things is always difficult, which is why it’s important to have clear processes. When changes are necessary, there will be an appropriate process in place to make sure that everything goes as planned.
By having these processes in place, people will know what to expect from you and your team members. They will also feel more comfortable asking questions or making suggestions because they will know where all of the resources are.
Change can sometimes create anxiety for individuals working with you. It may even hurt their feelings if something does not seem natural to them.
It is very important to remember that relationships are built upon trust, so make sure to establish strong foundations before adding new components to the mix. This includes creating open conversations about things and people, and supporting each other during times of change.
Change should never be forced upon anyone, especially when someone has done something successfully for a long time. Take time to evaluate whether or not this is really the right thing for you and your colleagues, and only implement such changes when you are both ready.
