Changing your team’s style is not easy, but it must be done if you want to see results. The easiest way to do this is by changing who comes into the room as a participant. You have to invite people in or they will remain outside!
By having different personalities in the same space, you can achieve so many things. A well-oiled machine doesn’t work when someone isn’t working. It puts too much pressure on them to keep the wheels turning because no one else can.
That’s why being aware of personal boundaries and what types of engagement are needed for specific relationships is important.
When someone needs less interaction than others, provide it for them, or they may look to other people that need more intimacy to feel connected. This could cause a lot of stress for both parties.
It’s also worth considering how each person functions and what energy they require from you. Some people need constant praise while some prefer conversations that challenge them.
Finding these ‘needle points’ makes managing relationship dynamics easier. When you know what buttons to push, you’re ahead of most people.
Find the right team members
As discussed, being an entrepreneur means having a diverse set of people that work for you. You will need to find different individuals with unique skills that complement each other’s strengths and that can take some time.
It is important to be clear about what you want from your employees and what responsibilities they have before offering their services.
You should also make sure that these individuals are invested in the long-term success of the business and that they will put in the effort needed to achieve this.
At the same time, they must feel like part of the company and included into decisions that affect them. If these two conditions aren’t met, then it’s probably best to look for new teammates.
Encourage teamwork
As mentioned before, team building is an important part of business development for any company that wants to succeed. Creating strong teams comes down to encouraging collaboration and understanding how people work.
This is especially true in these times where technology has made it easy to produce content quickly. Companies are realizing they can now survive or even thrive by outsourcing writing, designing, and marketing services online.
By having other professionals do this work for you, your company no longer needs to invest in expensive equipment or salaries for internal staff members.
More and more companies are offering rewards systems which incentivize their employees to outsource certain tasks so that they can focus on what they are good at. This removes some of the pressure from those working for the company!
Collaboration is also key when deciding who will be given credit for success. A lot of times, individuals have a hand in creating a product or service that wins praise, but there’s not much recognition given to the person who put in the effort to get them done.
Teamwork can reduce conflict and improve communication and efficiency, making it possible to know who did what and give each individual their due. It also helps create trust since everyone knows what the others bring to the table and feels comfortable relying on them.
Be a good listener
As a leader, you will spend a lot of time listening to people. You will need to listen to your colleagues, superiors, and external parties such as customers.
By being a good listener, you show that you are invested in their success and that you care about them. This builds trust which is key to having successful relationships.
As a leader, you also have a duty to educate others. By asking thoughtful questions and seeking input, you promote growth and understanding.
Keep an open mind when trying new ideas, approaches or concepts. Don’t close off possibilities just because you're familiar with something else already.
It's easy for a person who has never been exposed to new things to feel confident about themselves and their position, but if you don't stick around long enough to find out whether those things work or not, then you can’t really say if they worked or not.
So, be a willing learner instead of a know-it-all, and help develop and grow the skills and knowledge of everyone around you.
Be a good manager
A lot of people think that being a leader means getting all the work done and then sitting back and waiting for everyone to acknowledge your leadership and pay you respect. That’s not a bad thing, but it can be frustrating for them as well as you.
As a leader, make sure you are aware of what is going on around you. You need to stay focused on your responsibilities, but also be conscious of what others need from you.
They may feel overwhelmed or under-confident, so try to put their mind at ease. Help them do their job as efficiently as possible by giving them appropriate information and resources.
Give them feedback and ask if they needed anything else. If they say yes, take action on it!
Your team will appreciate your efforts and will keep doing whatever they were already doing until you intervened.
Be a good natural leader
As mentioned before, being a leader is not just having a goal to lead someone else out the door, it’s about creating an environment where people feel comfortable leading others. You have to make space for people to develop leadership skills that you’ll eventually need them to use.
People will always look up to you and follow your advice because they trust you. And when they do that, they’ll invest time into helping you achieve your goals, and investing in yourself.
As a leader, you will lose some battles. But don’t forget what made you a successful leader in the first place — you were willing to take risks and fail so that other people could succeed.
By using this mentality as a leader, I hope you'll help create an environment where people can challenge you, but also believe in you.
Help your team feel appreciated
As a leader, you will spend a lot of time working with people, so making sure that they have what they need to succeed is important. Make sure to let them know how much they mean to you through actions, not just words!
Ask about their day, if they’ve got something going on, offer to do something with them. Or better yet, invite them somewhere for lunch or a movie to show off the company.
If someone does something great, tell them! A word alone doesn’t always make an impact, but when you can back it up with proof, it does!
Keep looking out for things that person could be needing and give it to them, or find ways to help them. When people see that you care and are trying to address their needs, it makes them want to go above and beyond for you.
At the same time, they’ll look at you as a leader who sets an example by demonstrating this unselfish behavior. People will strive to earn your praise and acknowledgement and keep up these good habits.
Be consistent
Consistency is one of the most important qualities to look for when investing in business team members. You will have to work with this person every day, so make sure you are consistently putting in the effort that they require.
As mentioned before, consistency is an integral part of who someone is. If you see a pattern of good behavior, then chances are they will keep doing it!
Consistency can be done either at the workplace or outside of work; e.g., if someone meets with you twice a week for an hour each time, they may not agree to meet with you once a month because they believe they’ve made enough progress during their last meeting.
So, what about people who lack consistency? They might show up sometimes but never really take off until you ask them to do something. It could be due to workload demands or maybe they just don’t care much about things.
If there’s no reason why they can’t perform a task, then you need to give them a reason why by creating opportunities for them to prove themselves. This could be through asking how they would accomplish a goal or offering to pay extra money to get the job done.
By being consistent yourself, your colleagues will learn from you and will try hard to match your level of performance. Plus, you will inspire others to follow your lead.
Focus on the team as a whole
As mentioned before, being an excellent leader is more than just leading people under you but creating an environment where everyone around you can thrive and enjoy their job. This is very important to note because leadership cannot be pointed at one person or few people.
As your career progresses you will come across different levels of leaders and leadership styles. Some are always known for putting out strong messages that require no action from others to believe in them, while other leaders may lack motivation in their position.
It’s difficult to maintain momentum when there isn’t anyone next to you who feels the same way you do. It takes a lot of effort to keep up morale, so make sure to check out how those around you are feeling and what needs to be done to improve things.
If someone less experienced is having trouble overcoming a challenge, offer your help! Or if someone looks like they are losing hope, find ways to rekindle their spirit.
Don’t force cheerfulness on someone, but try to understand why something has gone wrong and what could be done about it. If nothing seems to be working, ask whether you can do anything else aside from quitting.
