Hold team meetings
As a manager, you’ll need to hold regular team meetings where everyone can share their thoughts, talk about things is an urgent matter, and work as a unit towards a common goal.
Team meeting should be held at least once every week and sometimes more frequently depending on what matters are being discussed and how much time people have to attend them.
They can be informal or formal, but they must happen! And it's important that each person attending the meeting feels invited and included. They must feel like they're part of the team and able to speak up if something isn't clear.
Regular team meetings help keep communication open, ensure all members know who else in the department works with them, and create trust and solidarity within the group. This creates a supportive environment that allows for better productivity and efficiency.
Use teamwork
As mentioned before, team building is not about having fun together as a group of people, but rather creating an environment where everyone in the group works towards a common goal. In other words, it’s not about being friends, it’s about working together to achieve something important.
That sounds vague and fuzzy, though, so let me give you some examples.
Imagine that your department has been assigned the task of raising money for a charity event. Everyone in your department will have different things they can contribute, and there are always more passionate people than others when it comes to charities.
Some may be willing to put in time at a fundraising event, while others may be able to make a bigger contribution elsewhere. You probably don’t need us to tell you that some may feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs doing, and that feeling gets in the way of them contributing.
Ensure there are shared goals
As mentioned before, team building is more than just having fun together. It’s about creating strong bonds that contribute to productivity and success. When people work well together, they appreciate each other’s strengths and help out when needed.
It also creates a sense of trust and confidence in one another which helps promote teamwork in the future. A productive working relationship is built upon respect, communication, collaboration, and accountability.

Make it fun

The key thing about team building is that it should be fun! If your team members are spending time working hard while also struggling to relate to each other, then they will probably not want to continue meeting after the activity is finished.
If the activity was too casual and didn’t test anything beyond how well people work in groups, then nobody learned much about themselves or their teamwork skills.
Planning a team-building exercise takes time, so make sure there’s enough time to talk about what happened afterwards. Also, don’t feel that you have to use totally new games or activities when planning team days.
Using something familiar gives people some common ground and helps them connect more easily. The better your teams connect, the easier it will be to achieve your goals as a unit.
Take up challenges
As mentioned before, team building is more than just having fun together. It’s exploring how well you work as a unit and understanding the roles that each person plays in the organization.
It can also mean taking an objective look at your workplace to see what needs improving or changing. If someone on your team seems to be struggling, maybe they need some help from another member of the team.
Or, if there are certain people who keep getting promoted even though they clearly aren’t performing their jobs properly, it might be time to start looking for new opportunities.
If you’re ever feeling like no one on your team has any idea about anything, take some time off and do something you have been wanting to try for a while. You could give a lecture at your department annual meeting, organize a brainstorming session with other departments, or simply learn something new yourself.
Your colleagues will probably admire your initiative, and you’ll feel better knowing you haven’t being wasting your talent.
Create a positive environment
As a leader, you can create an inspiring workplace by creating a productive work culture that is team oriented. Teams of people working together to achieve a common goal will always be more efficient than individuals focused on their own goals.
As a manager, you can promote teamwork through various activities.
Give your employees praise for good job performances or formal recognition such as awards or promotions. Take interest in what they are doing and talk about it with them. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts by listening to them and giving appropriate feedback.
You can also hold meetings to discuss projects, find out how well everyone’s performing and give each other helpful advice or suggestions. When these things happen, it creates a supportive atmosphere that encourages collaboration.
