This week, we are going to talk about how to eat passion fruit. Many people have never tried this delicious tropical berry before, but they look very interesting! They also taste wonderful when eaten correctly.
Passion fruits grow in clusters of up to 20 berries per cluster. The individual berries contain a sweet white pulp that tastes like coconut milk. The whole fruit has an intense flavor that some describe as tangy or sour depending on your personal taste buds.
Many recipes call for one passion fruit per person, which is usually enough unless you want more than one kind of passion fruit juice. That’s why it is important to know how to prepare a passion fruit properly so that only one part contains the liquid and none of the seeds get left behind.
There are several ways to consume passion fruits, so choosing the right way really makes a difference. In this article, you will learn three different methods to enjoy fresh passion fruits along with tips and tricks for each one.
Peel passion fruit
Now that you have pressed the pulp out of the passion fruits, it’s time to start peeling the skin off. Use your hand or a spoon to scoop away some of the peel until you can no longer feel the soft inner flesh.
The white part of the peel will remain as extra taste in the passion fruit juice. Don’t throw this part away! Save it and use it later in another recipe. Simply rinse under cold water and dry thoroughly before using it in another dish.
Once you have removed all of the peel, cut the remaining parts into halves or quarters and put in a bowl. Add sugar and lemon juice and stir to combine. Let sit for about one minute and then drink. You now have an easy way to make delicious passion fruit syrup!
If you like the sweetness more than we do, add less liquid and mix again right away! This syrup is great drizzled over vanilla ice cream, yogurt, berries, pancakes, or anything else you can think of.
Chop passion fruit
Now that you have pressed all of the juicy seeds, let us talk about how to eat your passion fruits! If you would like to mix some juices or use the pulp in recipes, then you will need to chop down your passion fruit first.
To do this, cut it in half using either a knife or spoon. Then take one piece at a time and scoop out the flesh with a spoon, leaving the skin behind. You can now add the pulp to your drink or use it in recipes.
If you are more creative, you can remove the skin using your hands or a washcloth! This way you get even more flavor from the peel.
Mix passion fruit into smoothie
Add one cup of fresh or frozen passion fruits to your blender along with two cups of water and blend on high for about five minutes.
The liquid will separate, but that’s okay! Simply use a spoon to stir down the layer of cream in the bottom and then pour the rest of the mixture through a nut-milk bag or cheesecloth to filter out the seeds and pulp.
Add three tablespoons of coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk) and mix together before adding it to your drink. You can now add some syrup if you like, vanilla, cinnamon, and/or salt to taste.
Repeat until all the ingredients are mixed in and you have an edible pink coloration. If you prefer it more vibrant, you can add less passion fruit white wine vinegar as a preserver.
Make tart or pie with passion fruit
While eating passion fruits is delicious, how to eat them can be a little tricky. Most recipes call for the seeds of the passion fruit to be eaten but if you would like to avoid these, then do not worry!
You can either use the whole fruit or just the juice. Simply cut it in half and squeeze out all of the juices, leaving none behind! Once done, toss the remaining bits and pieces into some compost or trash.
Make jam with passion fruit
Once you have your passion fruits, you will want to prepare them for use! You can either eat the whole thing or save some of it to make jam.
To eat the entire passion fruit is easiest if you cut it in half first. If you choose to do this, just pull off the skin and eat the inner flesh. If you like tangy flavors, then add some sugar and stir until dissolved.
If you would rather have the passion fruit’s juice instead of eating the seeds directly, simply pour the juic into a glass jar and set aside to ferment. The fermentation process removes most of the acidity and adds flavor.
Once it has fermented, take the liquid mixture and place it in a pot along with equal parts of sugar. Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil. When it reaches boiling point, reduce the temperature to keep it at a simmering state.
Continue to cook for one hour and test for sets using an immersion thermometer. This will determine whether you need to pack it in a container or not.
The texture and taste of the finished product depends on how much pectin was extracted during processing.
Try making a passion fruit butter
While eating fresh passion fruits is lovely, creating your own passion fruit butter is much more fun! This recipe takes around 30 minutes to make and only requires five main ingredients: 1 cup of melted coconut oil, 2 cups of pitted and chopped passion fruits, ½ teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, and 5 tablespoons of agave nectar or sweetener of your choice.
When these components are mixed together, the cream in the coconut oil will mix into the other ingredients and you have yourself an easy spread that can be used directly onto breads, toast, vegetables, or even as a dessert topping.
This recipe was inspired by one found online that calls for adding gelatin to the mixture but we left it out because we like our butter without added junk.
Try making a passion fruit cake
If you are looking to add some flavor to your baking, then adding in some dried or fresh passion fruits is one of the best ways to do so! They can be added into recipes as an ingredient or whole piece like berries that need to be eaten right away.
Passion fruits have a very tangy and sweet taste that comes from their thick skin. When eating them, try rubbing the soft inner flesh against the outer peel to release both flavors.
When they are in season, passion fruits are available year-round and can be purchased either frozen or dry. Make sure to buy only fresh ones that feel heavy for a burst of flavor and texture.
They are perfect to bake with because they will slowly break down and blend into the recipe. Most people enjoy eating this dessert raw, but when it bakes there is another layer of flavor which changes how to make it.
Many use all cream cheese to create an extra rich consistency, while others mix it into oatmeal or yogurt.
Eat the fruit
Many recipes require you to add passion fruits to your dish, but most of the time they are not eaten until later. When eating them, make sure to either crush or cut down on the intensity of flavor.
Usually, one piece is enough size for one person, so do not overbuy! If you like more passion fruit, then have another serving at home.
General tips: if you find it too sweet, you can mix in some type of sour cream or yogurt to tone it down. You can also sprinkle a little salt onto the taste to enhance that effect even more.
