Sometimes, you realize that your current passion isn’t working anymore. You feel stuck because you don’t want to spend your time doing something that doesn’t make you happy, so you keep putting off changing things or even quitting completely.
This can be tricky if you need this thing for income, but you have to really think about it before deciding whether to stay or go. What are you going to do if you never take a break?
You will burn out!
And we all know what happens when people start burning out. It goes from bad to worse.
If possible, try to find another way to get some money from your lost passion, but if not, then at least focus on finding a reason why you should remain in this situation.
Reading my article today may help you come up with reasons why staying is the best option. So, let’s talk about them!
Why it's important to stop chasing dreams
"Chasing dreams" sounds pretty inspirational, right? But unfortunately, there are very few people who actually succeed in doing it.
According to an article written by Jessica Else, writing coach, career consultant, and blogger, most people give up too soon when they decide to pursue their dream job.
Mostly, she says, this happens because people believe that they won't find what they're looking for, or that they'll lose hope and give up later.
Develop your skills
Now that you have determined what is killing your passion, it’s time to find out how to get rid of it! You need to look into some things, however. What kind of career does wonders for people? A career in arts or entertainment is an excellent example of this.
You may want to consider becoming an artist, writer, musician, dancer, etc. If you are already very artistic, then maybe you can start practicing your craft in those areas. Or if you love to read, why not become a novelist or author?
If you are more business-minded, there are many ways to be successful in the creative field. An art teacher could help you hone your communication skills while also inspiring students to pursue creativity. A writer could show you their tricks of the trade and even give you the chance to try your hand at it.
The best way to learn any skill is by doing, so go ahead and dive in! When you feel like giving up, just take a break and do something you enjoy instead. Also, search online for helpful tips and strategies. There are plenty of blogs, YouTube videos, and talk shows with great insights.
Once your passion has been rekindled, you will know exactly what to do next! Hopefully you will never actually have to work in a job that makes you feel this way, but thinking about other possibilities can help you prepare for life after passions burn down.
Find the right job for you
A passion mark is when you feel passionate about something non-monetary, like your career. You may have this feeling at a young age, when you wanted to be a doctor or a teacher or whatever profession comes naturally to you.
If that’s the case then great! Follow your dreams and keep learning as much as possible.
But if not, don’t worry! It's totally normal to want more money!
A lot of people do. We live in an increasingly individualistic culture where we expect to earn our own rewards. So it makes sense to want higher paychecks and prestige.
That's why in America, average income has been rising steadily for nearly two decades now. But what about those who are ahead of the curve? What about people whose incomes barely stay steady?
It can get frustrating trying to figure out how to change things when everyone around you seems to be doing well.
Make it your priority
Let’s look at this from another angle – what are you willing to lose, or sacrifice in order to achieve your dreams?
Are you willing to give up spending time with your kids so that you can work longer hours? Are you willing to let your spouse/partner feel neglected as you pursue your career dream full-time?
I know what I’m talking about because I have done all of these things before! And while each one was hard, I now realize they were worth it.
My life is the proof that if you want something, you will find a way to get it. You will invest in yourself and you will put in the effort needed to succeed.
But for you to keep success coming, you need to maintain some key priorities.
You need to make sure you don’t allow your passion to dwindle. You need to actively work on it every day. Even if it’s only for a few minutes each week.
Consider working with a therapist
If you feel that your passion is waning, it’s important to consider whether this means something more significant about yourself as a person is going away or not.
If the latter is true, then it's time to look for reasons why. Is there someone else in your life who makes you feel like less than you are? Are you spending too much time at work and/or taking on too many projects, leaving little time for other things?
By addressing these issues, you will find that your passion returns — if it hasn’t already.
The good news is that most people lose their passion for things around age 30-35. It’s an inevitable part of growing up.
So, don't worry about it! But do try to figure out what is causing it so you can address those factors.
Furthermore, ask yourself how passionate you were when you first started doing things. And compare that to now.
Is there a reason you're no longer as fired up by them?
Hopefully, there isn’t. So, work on solving the problem, but also remember that it's normal to lose some passions as you grow older.
Look at your stress levels
Sometimes, even though you have every reason to feel stressed out or overwhelmed, you can’t help but wonder whether all this tension is really worth it. You might try to push away thoughts about the things that make you feel stressed out, but eventually they will return, and then what?
You’ll be even more stressed than before. A lot of people describe feeling stressed as being in a state of high alert, but there is another way to look at it.
Stress doesn’t just occur when something unexpected happens; it also occurs when someone or something you want comes into your life.
When your dream job rolls around, for example, you get some serious nerves. But at the same time, you may find yourself thinking how much you wanted this career and wishing you could devote more time to it. It’s hard to know which feelings are normal ones and which ones mean something else.
But here’s one tip I can give you: instead of trying to eliminate these experiences, ask yourself if they’re actually serving you. Are you spending too many hours studying because you need to prove yourself to others? Or are you investing your energy in something that feels less satisfying than it should?
If you think you’ve found the balance that works for you, stick with it — but only up to a certain point. Once you reach that limit, it's time to let go.
Do yoga
One of the most common reasons people get rid of their passion is because they don’t do it enough. If you want to remain passionate about something, you have to work at it!
A few years ago I wanted to learn how to dance so I picked up dancing lessons once a week for one month. My roommate was able to go twice due to her job requiring her to be able to dance some time during the day.
I really enjoyed learning how to dance but then I would stop going because I didn’t feel like I needed more knowledge of dancing. It was hard to keep motivated since nothing has ever made me truly excited before now…but I tried my best!
After the 30-day period passed, I still felt very passionate about dancing in the sense that I loved practicing and watching others perform, but I never actually learned anything new. I gave up because I thought I had already mastered the basics and there was no need to continue schooling myself in this area.
Exercise more
We are spending less time exercising and it is showing in the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and get this – hypertension!
Hypertension happens when your blood vessels become constricted due to excess fluid or salt buildup.
When you exercise, you reduce that fluid intake by sweating and urinating, and increase heart rate so blood gets pumped around more effectively.
You also burn calories, so your body removes all the water and salts that have gathered for overfeeds.
And although most people think of weight loss as burning fat, actually getting rid of visceral (or internal) fat depends on active muscles working to move fluids out and regulate glucose levels.1
In fact, research shows that one of the main reasons why some obese individuals can keep their weight under control is because they actively participate in physical activities.2
It may be something like taking a brisk walk every day, dancing twice a week, or playing soccer with friends once a month.
Whatever activity you choose, just make sure you do not forget about it!
Not only does moving help you lose weight, but it helps improve overall health.
Spend time with your friends and family
Letting go of your passion is never easy, but it’s crucial to your long-term health that you do so.
It can be difficult to find motivation when you don’t feel like doing anything, especially if you spent all day focusing on how unhappy you are about one thing in your life.
But instead of trying to force yourself to be motivated, try looking for things that make you happy. Find activities and experiences that you have been wanting to do for a while now and get out there and do them!
Spend time with people who make you laugh every night, take an organized trip somewhere you've wanted to go for years, or whatever else makes you happy and throw those things into your schedule.
Do not worry about what you will be missing by leaving this place, what you will lose, or why you decided to leave this person. You were going to spend time together even if they made you miserable before, which means you won't miss much now either.
