As mentioned earlier, there are many health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. One fruit that has garnered a lot of attention is the passionfruit. Many people praise it for its taste and for improving your overall diet.
Some say that it removes heavy metals from the body, which can be harmful if you ingest enough of them. While this may sound dramatic, it’s actually very plausible!
Fortunately, we have some helpful information in how to use passionfruit to maximize its healthy properties.
What is passion fruit?
Passion fruits are not a new food item, but they have become very popular in recent years. They grow under special conditions and then one of two things happens – the plant produces a sweet pulp or it does not! If the fruit has already been harvested, you can still eat the seeds, just make sure to wash them first.
The thick white flesh of the passion fruit contains nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and beta carotene. It also contains antioxidants that help keep your body healthy.
Passion fruits are most commonly found dried down and mixed into desserts and beverages. When eaten raw, however, there are no nutritional benefits. But when preparing the fruit, do remember to wash it first!
Raw passion fruit can be a tricky flavor to enjoy unless you like tangy foods.
History of passion fruit
The passion fruit is not only an incredible source of vitamins and minerals, but also boasts some spectacular health benefits as well. There are several theories about how this delicious berry got its name. Some say it comes from the Brazilian natives who would pound the fruits together to make a thick pulp that they called acai or “people” due to its consistency.
Another theory states that the berries were so popular in Peru that when you ate them during sunset, it was like watching the beautiful colors of the setting sun! Thus, the name passion fruit.
However, none of these explanations tell us why the passion fruit has such high levels of antioxidants. These antioxidant compounds may help protect your heart, immune system, and skin by acting as anti-inflammatory agents and neutralizing free radicals.
There have even been studies showing that passion fruit can reduce blood glucose levels because of their low glycemic index. Having lower blood glucose levels can be helpful for people with type 2 diabetes.
Does it have many nutrients?
Recent studies show that aside from adding flavor to your diet, passion fruit contains several important vitamins and minerals. These include vitamin K, B1, b2, C, magnesium, zinc, copper, folate, and niacin.
Vitamin K is an essential nutrient needed for blood clotting. It also helps regulate bone metabolism. Vitamin K works with calcium to help prevent calcification or hardening of soft tissues such as the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, and kidneys. (This does not occur normally in healthy individuals.)
B Vitamins play various roles in creating hormones and other chemicals necessary for growth, function, and maintenance of all cells. They also aid in energy production and nervous system activity.
Zinc plays an integral part in more than 500 enzymes involved in over 100 processes in the body. These include proteins that control cell functions, antioxidants, DNA, and RNA.
Is it low in sugar?
One of our favorite recipes using passion fruit is something we call Coconut-Passion Fruit Ice Cream! This delicious dessert is made with coconut milk, vanilla extract, and one whole batch of passion fruits.
After mixing all three ingredients together, you freeze the mixture until it sets up and then whisk away the lumps! The leftover pulp from the passion fruits can be added to some sort of salad or used in another recipe.
If you love the flavor of passion fruits but just don’t like the texture, you can always add water to them and process them down further.
What are the effects on your health?
This delicious fruit can do so many things for you! Most people know that it is rich in vitamins, but few know about its other healthy qualities.
Passion fruits contain high levels of vitamin C, making them one of the highest sources after oranges. Vitamin C helps keep your immune system strong and aids in healing from external injuries or infections.
They also contain significant amounts of antioxidants such as lycopene and beta carotenoids. These antioxidants work to protect your body’s cells from oxidative damage, which can result in disease and premature aging.
Lastly, passion fruits are full of glucose and fructose, both of which help promote weight loss by providing quick energy.
Does it have many antioxidants?
Recent studies indicate that passion fruits are full of some of the most powerful antioxidant compounds in the world. They contain high levels of flavonoids, phenolic acid derivatives, and proanthocyanidins.
Flavonoids like these work to protect your health by acting as scavengers or neutralizers of free radicals. There are over 700 different flavonoid chemicals known, so it is not surprising that passion fruit contains at least three types!
They also contain melatonin which has sleep promoting effects and may help regulate circadian rhythms.
Passion fruits can be eaten raw or made into juices or drinks. They taste sweet with notes of tangy citrus.
Does it have many vitamins?
Most people know that passion fruits are delicious, but they may not know all of the health benefits of this fruit. Many believe that eating one tart or cupful of passion fruits is an excellent way to add some daily vitamin content into your diet.
That assumption is wrong!
It is actually very difficult to eat enough passion fruits to meet their recommended dose of vitamins. There are only about 20 grams of dried pulp in a whole pack- so you would need to consume at least 40 packs per day to get the full amount of vitamins.
More importantly, there isn’t much juice in a pack either – just six tablespoons! This means that even if you were able to stomach the entire thing, you would only be getting 6% of the recommend vitamin dosage for each serving.
So while eating a few passion fruits every day might taste good, it probably won’t do too much for your overall health.
Is it low in salt?
One of our favorite recipes in this article is something we call Ancho Chili Chicken with Grilled Passionsfruit! Along with the chicken, you get to grill some fresh passion fruits until they caramelize and melt into the sauce.
The most important part of this recipe is the roasted pepper sauce that accompanies the chicken. This includes one whole chopped ancho chili (we recommend buying it pre-sliced so it doesn’t cost too much!), one cup of pas sfouf (our favorite way to make hot liquid) and two tablespoons of nutritional yeast.
That’s all you need to make the perfect sauce! The rest is just pouring and mixing.
