A few years ago, there was a lot of talk about having a passion or life’s purpose. People referred to this as your personal mission or what you were meant to do with your life.
Nowadays though, it seems like everyone has a passion and they are talking about how to activate their passion card.
What is a passion card?
A passion card is an additional tool that can be used to boost your motivation and engagement in certain activities.
There are several theories about what causes our emotions to fluctuate, but one theory that has been proven to work is the reward system in your brain.
This theory says that we will not feel motivated to perform a task unless we get a small amount of pleasure or reward for completing it. This reward can be anything from eating dessert after dinner to finding new books you enjoy reading.
The more you expose yourself to things that give you a feeling of happiness, the easier it becomes to achieve goals. We refer to these experiences as rewards for your passion.
Some people may need more time to find their passion, while others may have it all along and just need to recognize it. Either way, it is important to acknowledge your strengths and use them to motivate yourself.
How to activate your passion card
Most people start looking for their passion at a young age, when they first realize they love to read or watch movies.
Find your passion and those who feel the same
Finding your passion is not like finding new shoes, you know when they're ugly and you'll walk away from them quickly. With passion cards, it's more like finding that perfect pair of jeans. You know if they don't fit or look good, you'll keep looking, but you'll eventually give up because there are just too many things you want to do and enjoy doing.
When it comes down to it, we all have different passions. Some people love to read, others love sports, some love to make crafts, and so on. This isn’t necessarily something you get by accident though; you have to work at it and invest in it.
You need to recognize what makes you passionate about something and then use that motivation to help you pursue other dreams. For example, someone might be very motivated to learn how to bake beautiful cakes, so she starts taking baking classes. Or maybe someone loves to play basketball, so he studies coaching techniques for hours every day.
By investing time into these activities, they will both bring you joy and help you grow. It doesn’t matter whether it's reading a book you've been wanting to read, playing a game you've wanted to try out, or learning a skill you've always wanted to learn — once you find your passion, anything can happen.
Take up hobbies
Having fun is an important part of life, and if you don’t feel like doing something, then it can negatively impact your health and well-being.
Research shows that people who are passionate about what they do are more likely to keep their jobs, avoid mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, and develop other areas of their lives such as relationships and career success.
Having passion projects helps create a sense of self-value, which in turn boosts happiness. It also gives you an area to focus energy on and may help motivate you to move forward with your plans after you have lost momentum.
Take some time every day to do things you love, and soon you will find yourself experiencing a feeling of joy and engagement. You will even notice your mood improving!
Activate your passion card by doing anything you enjoy for at least ten minutes. Then, make sure to stick to your plan by not quitting until you have completed the task.

Talk to people about your passion
It’s easy to talk about things that you love, but actually doing it is another matter. Sometimes we get so focused on achieving our goal that we forget to enjoy the steps along the way.
Become aware of how much time you spend focusing on what you want to achieve next. If you work in an office, go out for a lunch break every day or take breaks during the working day, then do the same after hours.
If you like learning new things, try attending events related to your passion. You don’t have to pay money to participate – there are free courses and seminars everywhere from anywhere via Google.
Once you’ve made some effort to bring your passion into focus, start acting on it! Do something small with this aim in mind, and build upon it.
Conversations will keep flowing if you are willing to be vulnerable and share your passions, as well as listen to other people’s. Don’t feel you need to always speak, however.
Ask yourself what more you can do to be passionate
Now that you have an understanding of your passion, it is time to work on how to activate it. Are there things that you are doing right now that could make you feel happier or even passionately about something?
Ask yourself if you’re asking enough questions and exploring different aspects of your life – both in relationships and outside of them.
If you're not sure where to start looking for answers, ask yourself these questions:
Am I living according to my own set of rules?
Do people agree with those rules?
Does everything I say come from a place of love or fear?
Are my actions motivated by love or money?
Take some time to evaluate this question and see whether you need to make changes to ensure your passion stays alive.
Connect with those who are passionate
We often lose passion for things because we become disconnected from them.
With technology, this is even more pronounced as it can be difficult to find people who enjoy what you like.
By having less contact with things that matter to you, you will begin to lose interest in them. This applies particularly to hobbies and passions that have gone out of fashion or that have been replaced by something new.
If you feel like you’re spending too much time chasing fleeting pleasures, then it may be time to re-evaluate your life priorities.
You could give up your current passion (or get rid of it if possible) and focus on pursuing things that motivate you. These could be creative pursuits, like painting or dancing, or professional ones, like studying or working in medicine.
Alternatively, you could add new passions to your repertoire — something that perhaps you've never done before.
Try doing things that make you happy
Having a passion is great, but being passionate is even better. Being passionate about something comes with spending time outside of work exploring it — reading books or magazines about it, talking about it with people who share your interest, etc.
This doesn’t mean going into workplace tantrums over what you have to do next week, it means celebrating what you already are doing and figuring out how to take it up a level.
If you love acting, spend time watching movies and TV shows that show off your acting skills. If you enjoy painting, look into classes or studying art.
Any hobby can be picked up at any stage in life so don’t feel like you need to be professional before you start – just get started!
Once you've got the basics down, add more advanced techniques and you'll find yourself becoming increasingly passionate about it - developing new tricks, finding new ways to apply what you know, and growing as an artist overall.
Having a passion is great, but being passionate is even better. When you are not feeling passionate about something, it can be hard to motivate yourself to work on it or invest time in it.
When you do not feel passionately about something, it can also negatively affect those around you who associate you with that thing.
Instead of trying to force yourself into having a passion, we should instead focus on making an effort to develop passions. This can happen through practicing any skill, meeting new people, exploring new things, and incorporating fun activities into your life.
There are many ways to activate your passion card.
We’ve discussed before here how important it is to identify your passion and what you are good at, but now we will talk about something more practical – how to use that knowledge to motivate yourself to do things.
Many people think that being motivated comes directly from feeling passionate or excited about an activity, but this isn’t always the case.
In fact, there's research showing that it can actually hurt your motivation to feel enthusiastic about an activity because you want to feel more passionate about it!

Research has shown that when you're doing something you don't enjoy very much, you'll put in slightly more effort than if you were doing something you enjoyed. This is called motivational compensation.
You'll spend the same amount of time doing the activity, but you'll be slightly more engaged with it due to the incentive of improving your enjoyment of the thing you're spending your time on.
This doesn't mean that you have to dislike what you're working on, but instead you need to find things about it that you don't like and work on changing them.
For example, if you love reading, then maybe you should not read for one hour every day unless you're in the mood to really invest in the story.
