The beautiful purple fruits of passion fruit are beloved around the world. They can be eaten alone, in desserts or beverages, or used as an ingredient in other recipes. Most people know how to eat them when they're young- you cut them in half and use your index finger to scoop out the white edible part that surrounds the slightly tart seed.
But what about when they grow up? Let's talk! Here we'll go over some tips for eating passion fruit when they're grown and in larger quantities. We'll also look at two easy ways to prepare it whether you’re in a hurry or have time to take extra care.

Types and Varieties of Passion Fruit
Many types of passion fruit exist depending on where it is produced and what kind of flavor profile it has.
Peel and slice the passion fruit
Once you have your peeler ready, cut away the skin of the passion fruits starting at the top edge and moving down. You want to make sure that you get all of the skin off, otherwise you will lose some flavor or even taste the pulp along with it!
Once you have removed the skin, use the tip of your knife to pry open the passion fruit. The easiest way to do this is holding one side closed while pressing down with your other hand. When you are able to separate the two halves, pull apart slowly so as not to break the seed.
Now that you have separated the seeds from the rest of the fruit, rinse each piece under water to remove any residue. If there is still some fuzz left over, run them through a clean mesh strainer or paper towel to soak up some of the liquid.
Combine with other fruits
For some of you, this may be a new fruit variety! You can combine passion flower powder with any other dried or fresh fruit to make a delicious dessert or snack. Just add it in at the same time as the other ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly.
Many people mix passion flower with chocolate chips to make what they call “chocolate passion flowers”. This is an incredibly tasty way to enjoy passion flower!
You can also try adding vanilla protein bars like Chia Bars or Hemp Hearts along with your passion flower berries. The sweet taste will be even better because of these additions!
Some recipes require melted chocolate, so if you have that leftover from making another recipe, you can use those leftovers to create your passion flower berrys!
General tips for eating passion plants
Just like with any plant part, you should always wash your hands and process them carefully before ingesting them. Make sure not to scrape off any dirt or residue that could contain chemicals.
Once you are done washing them, dry them completely to prevent water absorption. If there are leaves attached, you can either eat them or place them in a plastic bag to preserve their health value.

Mix with your yogurt
While eating passion fruit can be fun, trying to eat it alone may not be! The taste of this flower is sometimes described as tangy or sour, so why not enjoy it while doing some other things?
Passion fruits are usually mixed into something else before you eat them, such as yogurt or milk. Because of this, they go well when you’re drinking either of those foods.
You can also stir the pulp into your breakfast cereal or use it in recipes like guacamole or salsa. It will even help reduce inflammation due to its antioxidant content.
Sliced fresh passion fruit can be added to salads or used in desserts or snacks, but remember to wash the fruit first to remove any hairs that could hurt you or irritate your mouth.
Make a smoothie
One of the easiest ways to enjoy passion fruit is by eating it as part of a drink. You can eat it in its natural state, or you can add it to your favorite beverage and mix!
Passion fruits come in different colors depending on the cultivar. The color does not affect the taste too much, but some varieties are marketed on that basis. However, most people do not seem to care about this difference.
You can also make sure to remove the seeds from the fruit to limit how many potential germs you may be consuming. Seeds contain a compound called tannin, which gives the pulp a darker hue. This doesn’t change the flavor very much, but it does contribute slightly to the texture.
Another way to use passion fruit would be to soak one of the berries in the juice and then apply it directly onto your skin. Some say this helps mitigate inflammation so it could help with dry skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Make a pie
This is one of the easiest ways to enjoy passion fruit! You can either make it as a dessert or as an appetizer. To make it as a dessert, simply mix in some yogurt and milk and eat it like chocolate pudding.
Alternatively you can bake it into a pie crust and top it with things such as coconut cream or maple syrup and butter. Either way, this fruit will taste wonderful!
And just because you’re eating sweet fruits doesn’t mean there are not healthy tips you can use to help balance your diet. Because passion fruit contains antioxidants, they may contribute towards improving overall health.
These include vitamin C, lycopene, flavonoids, and phytosterols.
I recommend one tablespoon (5 ml) of dried pulp per slice of pie. A good rule of thumb is one half cup (100 g/or 8 tablespoons) of berries plus two slices of pie for every two cups (500 mL) of berry juice.
Try a tart
While most people know how to enjoy passion fruit in drinks, there are some great ways to eat it directly- either as a sauce or as an ingredient in other recipes. Either way, eating enough fresh passion fruits can be tricky because they taste delicious!
If you like spicy foods then adding some hot pepper sauce to your berries is a perfect way to try them. Add one or two spoonfuls of sauce per half cup of berries and mix well.
Your berries will now taste slightly spicier! This works particularly well with strawberries and raspberries. You could also add cinnamon or vanilla to create more flavors in the recipe.
Strawberry Sauce is a classic combination that many people love to make.
Try a dango
A Japanese dessert that sounds tricky at first is actually very easy to make. Dango are noodles in gelatin or rice powder mixed with other ingredients such as fruits, coconut, chocolate chips, and/or nuts.
Most people agree that the best way to eat a dango is by using chopsticks and holding it in your hand like a noodle. After you have eaten all of the components, use your hands to mix them together and then either spoon it into a bowl or just lick the leftover mixture off your fingers!
Dango can be flavored nearly any way you want. They suggest adding flavorings such as cocoa powder, cinnamon, and sweetened condensed milk to increase taste. You may also add dried passion fruit pieces if needed so that they do not overly sour the recipe.
Another tip is to freeze the finished dango before eating it because this helps ease the craving slightly.
Try a parfaits
For one, passion fruits can be mixed into your breakfast or lunch bowls! They are great in either an individual cup or as part of a combination fruit bowl.
They also make excellent additions to any plain yogurt or milk you have for dessert. Simply mix in some berries and enjoy!
You can also add some coconut water to taste to balance out the sweetness of the fruit.
And if you love them, try spreading it all over toast or using it in recipes! The possibilities are endless.
Editor’s note: As with most foods, do not overdose on these plants unless you know what they contain and how much is needed for effectiveness.
Passion flowers are no exception. Make sure to only ingest the amount needed for health and wellness.
