This week, we are going to talk about how to eat passion fruit when it is ripe! Passion fruits come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common – they taste delicious. They can be consumed raw or dried, sugared or unsugared, and even mixed into drinks or desserts!
Their tangy flavor makes them perfect to enjoy right away, or you can store them in your refrigerator or freezer until you find a use for them. When choosing passion fruits, make sure they feel smooth and soft and smell slightly sweet. If these look too hard, they may have been overripe and not so tasty!
There are several ways to prepare passion fruits depending on what type of recipe you want to use them in.
Look for passion fruit that aren’t too dark or wrinkled
Now, when you buy your passion fruits make sure they are fresh!
Passion fruits will become less delicious as they get older than we realize. As with most foods, the texture can change, and some of the natural compounds may begin to break down.
However, there is a way to ensure that doesn't happen!
You have to eat them right after buying them! Before eating them, try rubbing the skin of the passion fruit against your teeth. If it comes away easily, then it has lost its flavor slightly.
But if the peel sticks really tight, then it hasn’t changed at all and it will still taste just as sweet! This trick works best if the passion fruit was sitting out in the sun or refrigerated before you took it off the shelf.
Buy it when it’s firm and heavy for its size
As with any tropical fruit, buying passion fruits fresh is your best bet. They will taste the most vibrant and tangy if you buy them freshly harvested!
Passion fruits develop a natural souring agent as they ripen. This sour compound comes from a type of beta carotene that grows in intensity as they age.
When shopping for passion fruits, look for ones that are hard and solid rather than soft and squishy. This indicates that the fruits have been properly stored and transported and thus will be of higher quality.
Once you have found a batch that meets our criteria, just pull out the seeds (they're edible!) and eat the rest right away! Your hands will get slightly tart as you work the fruit through your teeth.
Slice it in half and scoop out the seeds and pulp
Now, once you have your passion fruit ready, the next thing to do is slice it in half and scoop out the seeds and pulp. This can be done with either plastic bowls or using a spoon directly into the bowl of a hand blender.
If doing this with a spoon, make sure to scrape all of the delicious juice and flavor that has gathered in the bottom of the passion fruit away!
Once everything is removed, put the passion fruits in an airtight container or bag and store them in the refrigerator or freezer until you can use them. They will keep for up to one week if stored properly.
I like to wash my passion fruits first before I eat them because there are sometimes stray hairs inside which could potentially get stuck in my mouth.
Eat it right away or refrigerate
If you are planning to eat your passion fruit raw, then make sure you are eating it either immediately or that it is chilled so that it can be swallowed more easily.
If you choose to have it cold, then put the cut part of the passion fruit in ice water for around 10 minutes before consuming.
Both ways are totally fine! The only thing is that if you let the skin dry out, then when you try to swallow it, it will taste less pleasant and/or cause choking. So, just make sure to use a spoon and avoid letting the skin touch your lips or mouth.
Another option is to remove the inner pulp and layer of white flesh first, and then add it to the outside as a separate piece.
Try it in fruit salads or use it in smoothie bowls
If you are ever given a passion fruit, eat it immediately! This will take some time since they are not necessarily in a fast food restaurant where people are trained to do that.
However, if you are able to spot one, grab it and eat it! The taste is tangy with notes of mango and coconut. It can be tricky to get all the seeds so try scooping them out or using a spoon – just make sure to wash both thoroughly!
Another way to enjoy passion fruits is to mix them into your dessert or breakfast recipes. They pair well with almost anything! You may want to add a little bit more sugar or cream to balance out the flavor.
Passion fruits are rich in vitamin C and potassium which help keep your skin healthy and regulate blood pressure. Heavier foods can be a good switch from eating only fresh fruits and vegetables because they feel heavier due to the weight difference.
Mix it into your favorite yogurt
Add one passion fruit piece per 1 cup of plain low fat yogurt, mix well and you’re all set! This recipe makes for an excellent dessert or snack option because it is rich and flavor-full.
Passion fruits are in season from May through September depending on where you live. They can be purchased fresh or dried, but if buying the latter make sure they have no additives such as sugar or water.
If you enjoy this recipe, try experimenting with different amounts to achieve the best taste.
Something important to remember when eating passion fruits is not to overdo it, either buy them pre-made or take care not to crush the skin. The vibrant color comes from the betacyanin, so eat it slowly and admire the beauty of the fruit.
Make passion fruit tart or pie
If you are looking for an easy way to enjoy passion fruits, then making a dessert or cooking recipe with them is the right thing to do! Making desserts with fresh berries is always a crowd favorite, so why not add some flavor of your own by using passion fruits?
Passion fruits can be expensive if you buy them in stores, which may make it difficult to enjoy this delicious treat frequently. Luckily, there are many ways to make your own fermented dried passion fruits at home!
Fermented dried passion fruits are great to have in your diet because they contain high levels of antioxidants and probiotics. Antioxidants help keep your body healthy by acting as natural defenses against free radicals that could potentially damage cells. Probiotics promote health by helping preserve gut balance.
This article will tell you how to make your very own fermented dried passion fruits at home! They take around twenty minutes to make and require nothing but water, sugar, and gelatin. Then, you just have to let these fruits ferment and dry down for one week before experimenting with recipes.
Try it in cocktails
The lovely pink fruit we speak of today is actually called a perianth, or more formally pannacotta. It comes from an Italian word that means “to set cool” as well as “foaming agent.”
That last one sounds weird, but trust us! You'll know what we're talking about when you try it.
It's very easy to make passion fruit cocktail at home. In fact, most recipes call for just the pulp left over from juicing the fruits.
You can either drink it itself as a dessert soup or add some sweeteners and flavorings to taste.
Alternatively, if you like strong flavors, try adding the pureed passion fruit pulp to other dishes. We recommend baking it into cookies or using it in cakes and desserts.
