What are passion fruits?
Passion fruits are berries that grow on a vine-like plant. They come in two sizes: large and small. Only the large ones count as passion fruits since only these contain the delicious flavor and texture that makes them special.
Just like any berry, passion fruits contain high amounts of vitamin C, iron, and potassium. However, there is something unique about this creaminess within their flesh - lycopene.
Look at the skin
The passion fruits we use in recipes are usually sweet, so there is no need to consume them if you cannot determine when they are ripe!
By looking at the skin of the fruit, how soft it is, and whether it wrinkles as you peel it off, you can tell when it is mature and therefore taste good.
When they are mature, the skins will be wrinkled and the flesh will be slightly tangy and sour.
Use a banana peel
Like most fruits, passion fruit comes in fresh or dried form. If you dry them out, they can become quite hard and this effect is not desirable. Therefore, if you want to eat them, it is important to know when they are at their best.
One of the main ways to determine whether a passion fruit is ripe is by using a piece of your regular use banana peel. If you can easily pull away the skin with no glue left, then it is safe to say that the passion fruit has lost its flavor and will need to be discarded.
However, if there is enough glue on the peel that it doesn’t come off very well, then it is still okay to taste just a bit more than normal.
Use your nose
The texture of passion fruit changes as it ripens, which makes it hard to tell when they are ripe. This includes whether they are soft or tart.
As passion fruits mature, their texture usually becomes slightly softer and more spread out. They may also develop darker streaks due to skin darkening that occurs as nutrients begin to grow in the pulp.
However, unless you like very tangy or sweet foods, this process can be frustrating for hungry people. Because they taste better when eaten within hours, there is not much you can do except wait and hope for the best!

Use a toothpick into the fruit
Now that you have your passion fruits prepared, it is time to determine when they are ripe! The best way to do this is by using a toothpick. If the skin of the passion fruit has broken down slightly and the flesh is also soft and not hard, then it is ready.
Just make sure to check both types of passion fruit separately as some may be sweeter than others due to how long they were left to ripen before being picked.
It may feel hard
As mentioned before, when passion fruit is ripe, it will give off an intense sweet smell that people love. This includes those who like raw foods or who eat fermented foods like kimchi or yogurt!
This doesn’t mean you have to buy every single one of them, but if you want to try making some recipes, then make sure they are well-ripened so that they don’t taste sour.
You can also sniff around outside to see if there is any sort of strong scent coming from the berries. If there is, they have probably dried up and lost their flavor and texture, which means they might be overripe.

The passion fruit is in season once all of its fruits have been harvested and dried. This happens around November through April, depending on the variety!
The taste of passion fruit comes from the tangy flavor of the limes or berries that were used to process it.
When they are ripe, the passion fruits will be soft and slightly brownish-yellow in color. They will also give when pressed firmly together.
As mentioned before, not all varieties will develop this distinct feature of being acidic.

While passion fruit can be consumed at any time of the year, they are in season from May to September, depending on where you live. If you love them, then make sure to purchase fresh ones!
The texture and flavor will change as it ripens, so try one before buying if possible. They do not keep well dried out, so buy them directly from the source or pack your own food.
A good way to know when it is ripe is to pull off some seeds and check whether they turn slightly brown or dark purple. The skin should also become thinner and more wrinkled like a banana’s.
Another way to tell is to cut one open and see if there is pink fluid that has seeped out.
