Alexa routines are the ways to use voice commands to create complex tasks that involve multiple actions and trigger multiple devices.
These devices are controlled by Alexa and require different actions to trigger.
For example, you can say “Alexa, Good Morning” and the system will turn on your lights, play the news, and have your Alexa-enabled thermostat turn up the heat.
But Alexa will only know about those things if you say those commands to her every morning.
When you set up your routine, you’re picking several devices to activate.
This number can vary for each routine. For example, you may have 2x Philips Hue lights as triggers for your Morning Routines because they’re controlled by Alexa. Or you may have one for making coffee and one for bringing the dogs out to the potty.
You might also have other devices like a coffee maker or laundry machine, that are triggered for each turn-on of a light. This allows Alexa to trigger a variety of things, including actions like setting your thermostat or unlocking the door.
When you enable the Alexa Skill Blueprints for Alexa Routines, you select one of your routine settings. These settings allow you to create a specific number of actions that will trigger your Alexa-enabled devices.
That number of actions depends on the device and how you want to use it.
For example, you may want Alexa to set the temperature at 65 degrees for your living room and have your Philips Hue lights automatically turn on to make it comfortable for you when you walk in.
Once you’ve set up your routine, you can add the triggers that you want to use. For example, you may have two of your lights automatically turn on if the temperature in the living room goes above 60 degrees.
This will trigger your 2x Philips Hue lights, which are controlled by Alexa. But you may also want to set the temperature in your living room at 60 degrees and have the coffee maker start brewing coffee at the same time.
You could then say something like, “Alexa, good morning” and have Alexa turn on your lights and start making your coffee at the same time.
To create your morning routine, you will need to set up multiple Alexa Routines, which is the name you give to the unique list of trigger events you want Alexa to trigger.
These are separate from the options you have in the Alexa App, which are called Routines.
There are 3 different types of Alexa Routines you can set up. These are:
When you create your routine in the Alexa app, it takes place in your home. You’re working with all the devices you own, and the Routines that your family can use.
The morning routine that you’re creating will be unique to your needs, family, and location. To customize the Alexa Routines you create, you’ll first need to go to the Alexa App on your smartphone and open the Routines menu.
First, you’ll need to create a room and add an Echo device. You’ll need an Echo device that has speakers, microphone and is in a room you want Alexa to trigger actions in.
You can start with one or create multiple rooms. You can use this as a game. You can each pick an Echo device, and create routines to trigger actions that take place in that room.
Choose one of your routines and tap “Add Action.” This will take you to the next screen.
You’ll need to select a trigger and an action. Select the trigger option, and tap “Use a trigger.” This will take you to a screen where you can choose a trigger.
Select either a morning or night trigger. You may also choose between Alexa or your Google Home device. Click “Save” to finish.
You’ll need to select a trigger. Select a sunrise or sunset trigger. If you pick a sunrise trigger, you’ll need to choose one of the sunrise options.
If you choose a sunset trigger, you’ll need to choose one of the sunset options.
You’ll also need to select a skill from the Skills Manager. Select “Connect to Your Routines.” This will take you to another screen where you can add in your skills.
When you select “Add a Skill,” you’ll need to sign in to your Amazon account. You’ll need to do this in the Alexa app, too. When you do, the screen will appear asking you to select a different skill from the list.
This will take you to the next screen. You’ll need to select an Alexa-enabled device. You’ll need to choose an Echo device.
At the top, you can choose which Echo device you want Alexa to trigger from. You’ll also need to tap the touch screen to add another Echo device.
This will take you to another screen where you can connect to another Echo device. You can choose your morning, afternoon, or evening Echo device.
The list will be pretty self-explanatory.
From here, you can also select if you want Alexa to trigger the Routine only if it’s being used, or if it’s active for all the family members.
You can also select whether or not you want Alexa to launch your morning routine. Alexa will then ask you what to say if the routine is activated.
Once you’ve chosen a morning or evening routine, you can tap “Create.” The routine will be created, and you can add it to the Routine. The Alexa app will then close.
At the top of the screen, you’ll see a badge. This badge has the name of your routine.
On the bottom, you’ll see a couple of icons. You can toggle the “Open the Routine on the Amazon App” to create Alexa Routines on your smartphone.
This will take you to another screen where you can select how your routine will be received. The default mode is your phone is connected to the Internet.
You can select a default phone, an alternate phone, or nothing. This will take you to a screen where you can also change the name of the routine.
The default name is “Good Morning,” but you can also name it whatever you want.
To share your routine with Alexa, you need to enable “Share Routines” in the Alexa app.
From there, you can share a routine with others. For example, you can send one routine to all your family members.
This screen is where you can select if you want Alexa to trigger your routine or an Echo device. Click “Sharing.”
This will take you to the next screen. You’ll need to connect your Echo device to a mobile app, and you’ll need to install the Amazon Alexa app on your phone.
You can also link it to the same Amazon account, and you can pair it to multiple accounts.
You can also select to update your routine. This will update it with the most recent changes.
For example, you can add your morning routine to include weather updates.
At the top of this screen, you’ll see a badge. This badge has the name of your routine.
Click on the badge to get to the next screen.
You’ll need to select the “Create Event” option. You can choose to have your routine be scheduled on a certain date and time, or a certain day.
You can also choose to change the name of your routine.
For example, if you create a morning routine that activates at 6:00 AM, you could change the name to “6:00 AM” in the morning.
